Because a good draft isn't a ready document.

Professional editing is the last, necessary step from ‘done’ writing to writing that works. A document can look finished but not yet be ready to do its job, and exactly why can be hard to identify when you’re too close to it. A professional editor brings an objective, ‘fresh eyes’ perspective backed by experience and specialised training, making editing a valuable part of your writing strategy.

Documents that don’t work may have strong arguments lost in dense language, or flow logically but be inconsistently styled. If there's been multiple contributors, the voice can be all over the place instead of uniform. Some are full of convenient AI words but have no clear, focused meaning. It’s all hard to see when you’ve put so much effort into the piece or you've been under pressure to churn it out quickly.

Without attending to those issues, the document is never going to achieve what you need it to. Sending it out as it is won't leverage its potential for helping you kick goals. It'll become another strategic opportunity wasted.

Our professional Editing packages refine pretty good documents into truly effective ones, fit for purpose and ready to work for you ‒ correct, consistent, clear and cohesive.

Our Editing packages include ...

  • project editing: structural or copyediting in Word, proofreading pre-publication in PDF, plain language or accessibility editing, style guide alignment checks – personalised quote from $400 + GST for 1,000 words
  • editorial retainers: on-call editorial advice when you need it to get you through a project (or life) – from $1,100 + GST for 10 hours per month
  • pre-publication reviews*: checking your finished documents one. last. time. for clarity, plain language or accessibility  – from $400 + GST for up to 1,500 words.

* Pre-publication reviews are different to proofreading. Reviews look specifically at clarity, plain language or accessibility, and our findings might mean you have more work to do. Proofreading reviews the entire document or publication for issues missed during editing or introduced later, and at this stage of the process, it's too late to rewrite or rejig anything major.

How our professional Editing packages work

We start with a briefing call or meeting to understand your concerns and aims for the document and establish timelines. From that, we’ll create a tailored quote.

Once you’ve signed a work agreement (and, depending on the size of the project, perhaps paid a deposit), we’ll commence editing.

Generally, we review documents at bigger-picture level first ‒ argument, structure, flow, navigation ‒ then move to sentence-level clarity, consistency and correctness. You get back a change-tracked result that's ready to go, with clear notes explaining our editorial rationale and suggestions.
